Install and Setup

Start with the free compatibility test; it needs no account. To download the add-in itself, create a free account and choose the Individual plan, as described in the Quick Start.

1. Download and unblock

Windows tags files downloaded from the internet, and Office blocks macros in tagged files by default. You'll see a red bar saying macros have been blocked.

Fix it before opening the file:

  1. Right-click the downloaded add-in (.xlam) or compatibility test workbook and choose Properties.
  2. On the General tab, check Unblock, then click OK.

If your company manages Office settings centrally, the Unblock box may be missing. Ask IT to add the add-in's folder as a Trusted Location instead.

2. Check your macro settings

Go to File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings → Macro Settings.

  • Choose Disable all macros with notification. Excel asks before running macros in a file, and you decide which files to trust. Avoid Enable all macros.
  • If you'll build applications with the add-in, also check Trust access to the VBA project object model. The add-in writes VBA for you, so Excel has to allow it. People who only use a workbook someone else built can leave this unchecked.

These settings apply to all of Excel, not just one workbook. If buttons or forms don't respond, check the ActiveX settings in the same Trust Center.

3. Run the compatibility test

Open the compatibility test workbook and run it on the machine you'll actually use.

4. Install the add-in

In Excel, go to File → Options → Add-ins, choose Manage: Excel Add-ins, click Go, then click Browse, select the .xlam and make sure it's checked. A new WHOA tab appears on the ribbon.

Some antivirus products flag the add-in by mistake. See the Security page for what to do, how to verify your download, and how IT can review the source code.
